If you missed Carlos Whittaker’s Praying Backward event last night, you missed one of the most incredible, intense moments I’ve ever seen. Almost 200 (when I was on) folks logged on and participate in the event. It was incredible to hear & read the prayers of one candidate’s supporters praying blessings for the other candidate and his family. Los & Crew: Thanks!

When I got up this morning, I prayed some more. Then I went to stand in line. A buddy of mine said he got there at 5:45 a.m. and it took him an hour-and-a-half to vote. I got there at about 7:55 a.m. When I first pulled in, I though, “this is a cinch! the line’s short!”  Then I walked over to where I thought the line ended, only to discover that it just bent, and it had wrapped around the building and almost out to the street. With umbrella in hand, I took my place in line. Things moved along well, and I had completed my civic duty and was back in my car by 9:00 a.m.  When my wife and mother-in-law went over mid-afternoon to vote, there was no line to speak of.

So I prayed. And I voted.  Now it’s time to pray some more.

I’m not praying that my candiadate will win (although that would be ok).  I’m praying for my country. There are already reports of acts of violence and obstruction of polling places. And as the evening unfolds, I fear there may be more. Innocent people harmed while excercising their consitutional right to vote. The young, the poor, the illiterate, the elderly, the disenfranchised and marginalized intimidated.

Tonite I’m praying for the end of voilence. I’m praying that folks will be good winners–and good losers. I am praying that the innocent will not lose their innocence at the hands of those who perpetrate voilence.  I am praying that men and women, boys and girls will be able to sleep tonite in peace & safety and not in fear. And I’m praying that the Church will act like Christ and not like the world regardless of which candidate wins.

((Consider this: Maybe, if the election doesn’t go the way you want it to, that this is God’s way of saying, “Hey….I want you to learn something during these next 4 years that I couldn’t teach you any other way!”))

But mostly, tonite, more than ever, I’m praying that the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Glory of God as the waters cover the seas.

Now that you’ve voted, what are you praying?

One Response to “I prayed. I voted. Now pray some more!”

  • Ray Westveer:

I pray today. Yet the thoughts that war within are so complicated as to render prayers ineffable. My prayers are silence and “Kyrie Eleison”
