Young at Heart

The person who first said “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” obviously had not seen Young at Heart.

It’s been playing this week at a local theater, and friends in the church gave Catherine and I tickets to go see it. We took some time out this afternoon to enjoy a respite from the heat, and man, I’m glad we did.

Young at Heart is a delightful documentary about a group of senior adults who are transformed into a touring singing group.  Now before you think, “How sweet…a bunch of old folk singing old songs and hymns,” you better check it out.  These folks sing a little of everything from James Brown (I Feel Good) to ColdPlay (Fix You) to Youth Sonic (Schizophrenia) and a little of everything in-between.  We laughed. We clapped. We sang along. And we cried.

Young at Heart is also a great metaphor for church revitalization, too. What a wonderful picture of the task that is before us as a traditional church to be able to engage a transitioning culture.

If you’ve not seen Young at Heart yet, do yourself a favor. Take a break from the heat and go see it. Just be sure to take your Kleenex.

And then drop back by here and leave a comment about how you feel the movie relates to the task of congregational transformation.
