Sunday Summary 06.08.08

Yesterday and today have been unbelievably hot here, so I’ll try not to add to much more hot air….

  • We had full power today, and the a/c was on. It was so pleasant!
  • Attendance today was fair. I think the heat outside kept people away.
  • Today’s message was on “When God Interrupts Your Life.”
  • Felt a real freedom in preaching today.
  • I believe the single most important thing we must grasp in the Christian life is the ability to know what God is saying to us and to be able to identify where God is working.
  • We’ve got to be attuned to where God is at work around us or we will breeze right on by it.
  • Most of the time we look at things as an interruption rather than a “God-eruption.”
  • Great story on front page of today’s Virginian Pilot about how crime in our neighborhood has dropped 45% in the last year (May 07-May 08) while crime overall in the city has increased 16% for the same period.
  • When Jesus went in to raise Jairus’ daughter, the skeptics–the professional mourners–made fun of Him.
  • Jesus just put them out of the house.
  • When will the Church stop listening to a bunch of skeptics who can’t even recognize Jesus when He’s right in front of them?
  • How much of the activity and blessing of God are we missing because we are letting the skeptics convince us something can’t be done?
  • After the service I was visiting with our folks when I got an urgent call that the fellow in our church who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor had died at home just about the time the service ended.
  • I went over and stayed with the family while the hospice nurse and the funeral home came, etc.
  • I thank God for our congregation. One of our dear friends took our kids to lunch and looked after them so I could be with the Grimes family. Our folks are so wonderful, and I am so blessed!
  • Last week I said that our church has been experiencing corporate anticipatory grief.  Now it’s become full-borne grief.
  • It’s one thing to walk with a grieving family. It’s another to walk with a grieving congregation.
  • Pray that I will be given the right words to speak for the funeral later this coming week. It’s gonna be a wild week.
  • Ok…..I’m officially tired now….so I’m gonna see if I can find a cool spot and hit the bed!
