Wired for Worship

Today I preached the third installment in a series I began the Sunday after Easter entitled Living with Urgency. Last Sunday we looked at 2 Kings 4 and the story of the widow borrowing empty vessels from her neighbors to make provision for God’s blessing in her life.

Today I preached about worship with texts from Ezekiel 1 and Revelation 4. As I was talking about how we are wired to worship, I was reminded of what happens when there is a short in our wiring. The fire department (and the insurance adjustors) agree that the fire in my Jeep a couple of weeks back was electrical in nature–there was a short in the wiring.

When there is a short in our spiritual wiring, we do not worship as we ought. And it is dangerous. We misunderstand the aim of our worship. We lose sight of the purpose of worship. Sometimes we get messed up about the reason we worship. We begin to think it is all about our preferences (style of music, time of day, location, etc), our comforts, our desires……we think worship is about us. And the moment we do, our wiring has shorted out.

And the vast majority of all electrical fires result from shorted wiring. Spiritual fires, too!
